Composition with Gray and Light Brown: A Masterpiece of De Stijl
Piet Mondrian's Composition with Gray and Light Brown is a quintessential example of his mature neoplastic style, where he reduced art to its essential elements: straight lines, right angles, and primary colors alongside nuanced grays and browns. Created in 1918, this work marks a pivotal moment in Mondrian's evolution, as he transitioned from his earlier Cubist experiments to the pure abstraction of De Stijl. The composition features a dynamic balance of rectangular planes in gray, light brown, and white, separated by bold black lines, demonstrating Mondrian's belief in a universal harmony underlying all forms.
